Claire,

Thanks for the update. I know that this has been a problem for a long time and am aware that it is a problem not of EH's making. I'm starting to think that the best solution might be to ditch the CDP searching option altogether. There seems little point in offering an option which does not work satisfactorily and scrapping it would certainly meet the criterion of ' Encouraging users to use the map searching as a more reliable alternative to the CDP'.

Just a thought!

Dear all,

Further to your comments regarding problems relating to CDP searching, please note that we are doing the following to alleviate this:

-Implementing a new search (the prototype circulated previously for comment) in the Heritage Gateway by the end of May. Improvements to the search following comments from the HER Forum include a predictive text solution which should alleviate the 'City of...' problems mentioned by Mike.
-Encouraging users to use the map searching as a more reliable alternative to the CDP, which causes many problems for our users, many of which aren't easily addressed.
-We are working with the OS to encourage them to include the Non Parish Areas in future boundary data. The Heritage Gateway Partnership Board have endorsed the approach that once the CDP prototype is in place in the website, we will review the impact this has on the users and assess options for the future, including phasing out the option of CDP searching completely.

Whilst this may not immediately address your concerns I hope it will go some way to reassuring you that we are committed to ensuring that the Heritage Gateway is as straightforward as possible to use for all our users.

Best wishes,
Claire

And, of course, where are Hitchin, Baldock, Rickmansworth, and other urban areas in Herts? These don't exist at all in this list except under their District name, because they are are non civil parishes, but are not unitary authorities. If you search for them you will get 'No matches'. If you search under 'North Hertfordshire (Non Civil Parish), North Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire' you will get all the entries for both Baldock and Hitchin, and the same goes for others unless the town name is the same as the district name (like Stevenage, Watford, St Albans). But of course the user has to guess that this is the case.

I have asked why they can't be given their actual names, in the form 'Baldock (Non Civil Parish), North Hertfordshire', but have been told it's too difficult.

On the other hand, it's easy enough to search using the new web mapping, for those of us who have signed up to it.

Subject: Heritage Gateway: problems with District/Borough/Unitary Authority list

I spent around 5 minutes looking for Wolverhampton on the District/Borough/Unitary authority list on Heritage Gateway before remembering that it was under C for City. If the HER Officer for the area can't remember this, what chance has anyone else got? Can I ask when this will be rectified? It seems to me that this is the biggest current problem with Heritage Gateway and at a time when I am trying to demonstrate usage to my managers in order to ensure that they continue to pay the maintenance fee I feel that I am doing so with one hand tied behind my back. Anyone from (the Cities of) Bristol, Derby, Kingston-on-Hull, Leicester, Nottingham, Peterborough, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent and Westminster agree?

Regards,

Mike
