Drive west from Shropshire into the towns of mid-Wales and you soon notice something is missing. The Tesco Expresses, Sainsbury Locals, Asdas, Morrisons. OK they have them in the largest towns like Aberystwyth, and there is a local chain, Tuffins, that has somehow escaped the maw of Tesco, but the small towns that in England would host a Tesco Express or even a Metro, if not a full-size supermarket, don't generally have one west of the border. Not many Co-ops, either, given that every large-ish English vilage has one. Anyone know why mid-Wales has been spared the supermarket invasion? It's not lack of population because there are small towns dotted around.
