SCOREX Fellowship in Statistics

Fixed term: 36 Months
Salary: 31,300 – 39,920 pa


Applications are invited for the Scorex Fellowship in Statistics, tenable for three years, starting 1 October 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.  The position is in the field of Statistics, with a particular focus on credit scoring and other statistical applications in retail finance.

The Statistics Section has a research group, led by Professor David Hand, dedicated to statistical aspects of consumer finance.  Generous funding from Mr Graham Platts has created this vacancy, to strengthen and diversify both the teaching and research activities of the group.

This research post provides an excellent opportunity for those seeking to pursue an academic career in statistics.

Candidates will hold a good honours degree and a PhD (or equivalent) in mathematics or a closely related subject with proven research ability in statistics, ideally applied in retail finance and related areas with a demonstrated potential for strong leadership qualities in the subject, as illustrated, for example, through showing initiative on research projects and a track record or willingness to develop expertise and research interest in statistical aspects of retail finance. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate exceptional ability in their chosen research areas.  They will have an outstanding record commensurate with their level of experience, as demonstrated, for example, through an outstanding thesis, publications and conference presentations, etc.  Candidates will be able to contribute significantly to the research environment of the Department of Mathematics, and have a proven track record of successful research interaction.

Fellows will be expected to undertake a limited range of teaching duties including the ability to teach mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level which is also essential, as demonstrated by excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to give effective presentations.
