PhD studentship: Large Scale Server Log Analytics

Sponsored by School of Mathematics & Statistics and Red Hat Inc.

Modern software architecture utilises components distributed over
multiple networked systems, each of which generates activity logs as
it runs. Analysis of these logs can e.g. reveal usage profiles,
identify performance bottlenecks, assist with capacity planning and
help predict failures.

Particular challenges exist in large scale software systems, as the
volume of log data may be widely distributed and may exceed the
processing capacity of a single machine. Several applications of the
data may further require that the analysis run quickly in order to
produce results within an actionable time window.

This project will focus on the application of statistical analysis
techniques to large scale log data, with particular attention to the
practicality of the algorithms for applicable data volume and time
constraints.
