Bristol Natural History Consortium have a festival every year for which they recruit volunteers. I'm not sure if you could ask specifically to do press stuff but it's worth looking into.
Also, press office experience doesn't have to be in the science communication area - try charities that use volunteers for events with a lot of press, maybe big mass-participation runs or family festivals...

Good luck.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Press Office Experience

Dear Wonderful Psci Commers,

I am a full-time research scientist (biology) doing a part-time MSc in science communication to boot. I am looking to eventually move away from the lab bench, get dressed (I am, after all, a female scientist, and we all know what that means...), and become enthralled in a science communication role. To this end I am applying for jobs in the sector, but finding that most "communicator of current research" positions require press office experience. Of which I have none.

Could anyone suggest ways in which I might feasibly gain such experience, while holding down a full-time job? (I.e. I am unable to take large chunks of time off work for internships in London - I am based in Bristol.)

Any industry-cracking ideas would be welcome.

Many thanks,
Laura
