On my Ubuntu 9.?, I could install gfortran up to version 4.6 with apt-get.
Very recently, I successfully installed gfortran 4.7 by compiling it from
source.
Just to avoid collisions, I installed it in /usr/local.
It seems to work without problems (but the process of compiling everything
took a long time).
