Dear all,

The Mind and Life Institute is pleased to announce the upcoming Summer Research Institute (MLSRI) centered on the theme: The Situated and Embodied Mind.

The purpose of the MLSRI is to advance collaborative research among scientists, contemplative scholars, other humanities

scholars, and contemplative practitioners, based on a process of inquiry and dialogue. With this unique program, together we are nurturing a new generation of scientists interested in exploring the influence of contemplative practice and meditation on mind, behavior, brain function and health, as well as fostering the development of new fields of research collectively referred to as Contemplative Science (including contemplative neuroscience, contemplative clinical science, contemplative education, and contemplative scholarship). The aim of Contemplative Science is to advance our understanding of the human mind and to understand how training the mind through the use of particular contemplative practices can reduce suffering, enhance health and cognitive/emotional functioning, lead to greater happiness and increased social harmony.

The 2012 MLSRI will be devoted to the theme, “The Situated and Embodied Mind.” Drawing on research in neuroscience, basic psychological science, clinical psychology, and philosophy and contemplative studies, this year’s MLSRI will focus on ways to integrate the study of embodied and situated cognition and emotion into Contemplative Science. Special attention will be given to the role of the body in contemplative practices and to biobehavioral investigations of these practices that go beyond exclusive focus on the brain.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Mind and Life Summer Research Institute to be held at the Garrison Institute in New York from June 16 (mid-afternoon) to the morning of June 22. The application period will close on Sunday, February 19, 2012.

Attendance at the program is based upon a competitive online application process in which you will be required to submit a CV/NIH Biosketch (max 2 pages) and a short essay (max 400 words) regarding your interest in attending, along with two letters of recommendation (Research Fellows only). Please go to this link for more details on the application process,

There is a nonrefundable application fee of $45. Registration fee should be paid by accepted applicants at the time of registration. The registration fee for Research Fellows is $350; for Senior Investigators, $675. This fee covers room and board and the program. Each participant will be expected to cover his/her own travel expenses.

NOTE: Your application does not ensure acceptance, as participation is limited by facility size, program guidelines, committee review of your application information and your letters of recommendation.
