Dear Colleagues, If anyone is in the Bath area you may be interested to go along to this lecture - given by Howard Nicolson, University Librarian at the University of Bath. Although not presented with any specific musical content it may give some useful insights into the general trends in public library provision. Public Libraries: past, present, future Wednesday 7 March Lecture Theatre 8W 1.1 British public libraries have a history going back to the seventeenth century, but are perceived by many as currently being outmoded and consequently in decline. This lecture surveys in outline the history of the public library, looks at some of the challenges they currently face, and speculates on how they can adapt to our age of public funding cuts, increased personal affluence and the Internet. Politics aside, the lecture considers how publicly funded libraries are adapting to changing needs and, where supported, are finding new ways to engage their communities. http://www.bath.ac.uk/lifelong-learning/lectures/Nicholson.html Frances Metcalfe Information Services Team Kent County Council Internal:7000 6444 External:01622 696444 www.kent.gov.uk/libs ********************************************************************************* When submitting postings to iaml-uk-irl please: * do not send HTML documents to the list - send plain or ASCII text only * do not send attachments (pictures, Word files, etc.) to the list - they can carry viruses * do not send commercial advertisements to the list * start your subject line for Inter-Library Loan requests with ILL Reuse of email addresses found on the list for unsolicited email is strictly forbidden
