PARK CITY, Utah The afternoon sun has cast a giant shadow across one wall
of the imposing 22-foot superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort.

.

On the other, members of the French national team are illuminated as they
catch big air, twisting and spinning as they prepare for another run at
the Winter X Games later this month.

.

Though they just arrived at this Utah mountain town, they know this is the
pipe where Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke, in critical condition at
a nearby hospital, was injured just days ago. And it is the same pipe
where champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury
two years ago.

.

Although the athletes training Thursday said they respect the sports
dangers, theyll continue doing what they do.

.

The danger is part of the sport, so you have to accept that, said Benoit
Valentin, 19, an alternate at the upcoming X Games.

.

The French currently have some of the best halfpipe skiers in the world,
with Kevin Rolland and Thomas Krief, and 2009 Winter X Games Champion
Xavier Bertoni.

.

We come here because its the best place to train at this time of the
year, French coach Greg Guenet said.

.

And they come because not only do they want to do well at the X Games but
at the 2014 Olympics, where the sport will be included for the first time.

Our action sports world is again in shock. One of freestyle skiing's top
women, Sarah Burke, remains in critical condition after a fall while
training in Park City a few days ago. As pro snowboarders, skiers, etc.,
we all know that what we do is risky. But when accidents produce results
like this we're left praying and asking ourselves questions.

.

Is this worth it? Why did this happen? What are we doing?

Sarah Burke is being treated at the Neuro Critical Care Unit at University
of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City after suffering a traumatic brain
injury and intracranial hemmorrhage Tuesday while training in the halfpipe
at Park City. "Sarah remains in critical condition in the Neuro Critical
Care Unit," said Safdar Ansari, the neurointensivist leading a
multidisciplinary team coordinating Burke's care, in a statement issued on
Friday.

.

"With traumatic brain injury, our care is focused on addressing the
primary injury and preventing secondary brain damage, as well as managing
other injuries sustained at the time of the accident; all of which
requires close monitoring and intensive care. At this moment, Sarah needs
more time before any prognosis can be determined."

Snowboarder Kevin Pearce sustained a massive head injury while training
Dec. 31 in Park City, Utah. While working on the double cork, Pearce
slammed face-first into an icy 22-foot wall of a halfpipe. Pearce was
admitted to a Salt Lake City hospital in critical condition and had
surgery. He stayed there until this month, when he was transferred to a
Colorado facility that specializes in rehabilitating brain and spinal cord
injuries.

.

Monday night, "NBC Nightly News" spoke with Pearce's family for the first
time since his injury. Though his family is encouraged, doctor's reports
reveal that Pearce has suffered memory loss and impaired vision, and he
will have to learn how to walk again.

The potential danger presented by the high walls and slick sides of
supersize halfpipes has come to the fore again, two years after the
champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce sustained a traumatic head injury.

.

The Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke, a four-time X Games champion and
2014 Olympic favorite, was seriously injured Tuesday in the 22-foot
halfpipe in Park City, Utah, the same place where Pearce was injured on
Dec. 31, 2009. Like Pearce, she hit her head while attempting to land a
trick during training and was airlifted to University Hospital in Salt
Lake City.

.

Sarah sustained serious injuries and remains intubated and sedated in
critical condition, the hospital neurointensivist Safdar Ansari said in a
statement.

.

Burke, a 29-year-old from Ontario who lives in Squamish, British Columbia,
successfully lobbied to add halfpipe skiing to the 2014 Olympic program in
Sochi, Russia. She was expected to defend her latest X Games gold medal
this month in Aspen, Colo.

.

Sarah is a very strong young woman, and she will most certainly fight to
recover, her husband, Rory Bushfield, said in a statement.
