A reminder of tomorrow's seminar at the RSS at 5pm. Patient Reported Outcome Measures: How is the PROMs Programme Progressing? Tuesday, 17th January 2012; 5:00pm at the Royal Statistical Society (Tea/coffee available from 4.30) Nick Black, Professor of Health Services Research, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine With about 250,000 eligible patients a year, the NHS Patient Reported Outcomes Programme is the most ambitious attempt in the world to routinely assess and compare hospitals on the basis of patients' views of their outcomes. Since April 2009, it has been mandatory for all NHS hospitals of four elective surgical operations (hip & knee replacement, hernia repair, varicose vein surgery) to invite patients to complete a pre-operative questionnaire on their health status. Participating patients are then mailed a follow-up questionnaire several months after the operation. This talk will describe how the programme has progressed and present findings of several methodological enquiries, including recruitment and response bias, social equity of use and outcomes, the inter-relationship of the several outcome measures collected, the impact of complications on health benefit/gain, patients' and clinicians' views of metrics and presentational formats. Future plans for expanding the programme will also be outlined. Attendance is free and open to all, but pre-registration is recommended.
