Job Purpose
The Professor for the Public Appreciation of Science will report to the
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Transfer), Professor Adam
Tickell, and will work closely with the Vice-Chancellor and other members of
the senior team.

The successful candidate will:

.use his/her highly developed networks in national press and/or broadcast
media to be a visible ambassador for the
University;
.promote the research of academics from the University of Birmingham and of
other universities to the interested general
public and to specialist audiences as appropriate;
.assist the marketing and communications team at the University in
developing the capabilities of academics in promoting
their research to a wide range of audiences;
.be engaged with the life of the University through activities such as
lectures to undergraduate students, public lectures
and PhD supervision.
Person Specification
.an excellent understanding of the requirements of science communication;
.a strong track record of scholarship;
.effectiveness and flair in teaching;
.a track record of work in the area of the public appreciation of science,
including experience of work in the broadcast
media
.an excellent understanding of the broadcast media sector;
.a range of generic skills to support and enhance research and teaching
activity, including excellent organisational,
communication and person management abilities;
.the ability to think strategically, to be imaginative and to anticipate
trends and opportunities;
.an understanding and experience of the administrative requirements of
higher education.
