The firs part of the opening sentence is qualified by the second part -
"how to treat incurable diseases that still lay waste to so many lives,
how to feed the growing population, how to tackle climate change". I
realise that many people do not have much faith in the judges of this
country exercising a little common sense, but dot try to make an issue
here where there is none.

The first sentence might well bewilder m' learned judge.

Science is not "at the heart of almost all the major challenges we
face".

Even the most diehard eco freaks would stop short of saying that science
is responsible for creating those challenges.

Science may be at the heart of understanding and/or solving almost all
the major challenges we face, but that is a very different statement.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Levenson Inquiry and Scientific Journalism

As you all will be aware (and how could you not be?!), the Leveson
Inquiry into the culture, practice and ethics of the press is currently
considering issues related to the press and the public. You may also
have heard that the Inquiry is also keen to understand better how the
scientific community sees coverage of scientific issues in the press and
wider media. Having been in touch with the Inquiry team I have been
told that this is indeed true. Submissions on the issue of scientific
journalism and science in the media can be made until the end of
January, but the Inquiry is understandably receiving a large volume of
evidence.
