Cross-posting this message regarding the DCMI Vocabulary Management System Task Group (a joint TG with the DC-Registry Community).  The conversation for the TG has been set for the Architecture Forum and has just gotten underway.  If you are interested in the work (read Gordon's message below) but do not belong to the Architecture forum list, you can join the list and the conversation with the following link:

Be aware that the Architecture Forum list shares its bandwidth with a number of other strategic DCMI conversations.

Colleagues

The DCMI Vocabulary Management System Task Group is a joint task group of the Architecture Forum and Registry Community. Its charter is to:

(1) develop evaluation criteria for a DCMI vocabulary management system (VMS) that will meet current and future needs of DCMI;

(2) assess existing candidate VMS applications based on the developed criteria; and

(3) report its analysis to the Oversight Committee and Advisory Board along with its recommendation of one or two viable VMS candidates for replacing the current DCMI vocabulary management environment.

The TG will also propose a community-driven approach to transition from the current to a new environment in light of its recommendations.

The timescale is 4-6 months.

Discussion will take place via the DCMI wiki [1] and the DC-Architecture list.

The immediate priority of the TG is to establish the functional requirements [2] and general requirements [3] of a vocabulary management system for DCMI.

Time is of the essence, so we invite members of the Architecture Forum, Registry Community, and other DCMI groups with an interest in vocabulary management to email suggestions to DC-Architecture or, better, edit the wiki pages. Please forward this email to any other relevant groups or individuals. We have provided links to notes taken during DC-2011 and to external resources which may suggest what requirements will meet the current and future needs of DCMI.

A good vocabulary management system is vital for the development of DCMI; we encourage everyone to think of how the system might support future activities of the general DCMI community as well as its special communities. And share those thoughts on general and functional requirements as quickly as possible!

Cheers

Gordon Dunsire (Co-Chair)

Corey Harper (Co-Chair)
