Hello Curwen – we do a lot via e-mail with distance learning students  – mainly enquiries about usernames/passwords and literature searching Science Direct, Ingenta, etc).  Live chat might be a bit difficult for us from a staff cover point of view – although I suppose if we had it so it ‘pinged’ when someone appeared – it is not much different to taking an enquiry by telephone at the desk!   It is something that we would consider – so I might be in touch again to see how it works for you.

 We do have live chat – but ours is the old fashioned (and best!) variety – over the Service Desk!

Hello ALLCU members,

Just wondering if any of you offer any type of live chat service to your users?

We are currently trialling Meebo (free software) and the service can best be described as very relaxed!

If you do run a chat service, could you let me know:


*         do you have a dedicated member of staff answering queries?

*         is it a librarian answering or an assistant?

*         does the service get well used?

*         what software you use?

*         what hours do you offer the service?

Any feedback on live chat would be most welcome.
