At least one of the following PhD topics will be fully funded for an appropriately qualified UK applicant.


·         Hierarchical agent-based spatial modelling of cities for long-term assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation options

·         Tsunami early warning in the near field: near-real-time GNSS and hydrodynamic modelling

·         Design and development of data architectures for the integration of crowd sourced mobile sensor platforms

·         Enhanced characterisation of urban green space using waveform lidar and hyperspectral data

·         Segmentation and classification of urban features from waveform laser scanning

·         Use of GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellite systems for geophysical monitoring

·         Real-time structural monitoring with GNSS

·         Models of bedrock thermal expansion for studies of global geodynamics

Location: School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Newcastle University (UK). We were ranked 2nd in the UK in terms of “Research Power” in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, with 90% of our research ranked “internationally excellent” or “world leading”. The PhD student will be located within the geomatics group, consisting of research in geodesy, GIS, remote sensing, urban modelling, sea level change and glaciology, amongst others.

In this case only applications are welcome year-round. It may be possible to part-fund up to one very well qualified non-UK student. In that case, please contact the relevant supervisor.
