L2 Prosody Workshop: 29 March 2012, Bangor, Wales, United Kingdom.
There is a general bias in L2 research towards investigations of segmental aspects of speech learning, with only limited attention to prosody. This is reflected in current L2 speech models (eg., Flege's Speech Learning Model, Best's Perceptual Assimilation Model) which rely on the cross-language phonetic similarity of segments to predict the relative difficulty or ease of perception/production of non-native speech, and ignore prosodic aspects of cross-language similarity. This workshop aims to promote research into prosodic aspects of L2 speech learning and the role of prosody in cross-language similarity. We invite abstracts for talks and posters on the production and perception of all aspects of prosody (e.g., intonation, rhythm, stress, loudness, tempo) in L2 learners or bilinguals.

It is our great pleasure to announce that InterSpeech 2012 will be hosted by the Center for Spoken Language Understanding, with support from the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA). InterSpeech 2012 will be the 13th conference in the annual series of Interspeech events. It will be held in Portland, Oregon, USA, 9-13 September 2012. InterSpeech 2012 will encompass the same broad range of topics as has been the proud tradition of this conference ever since its inauguration in 1990. In an effort to further enrich this tradition, it will have an area of special emphasis ('Spoken Language Processing and Biomedicine'), inviting contributions in assistive communication, language markers for neurological disorders, and computational cross-fertilization between spoken language processing and computational biology. The venue of InterSpeech 2012 will be the Portland Hilton.

Research Assistant: Prosody and word order

The LABEX EFL (Experimental Foundations of Linguistics) is looking for a Research Assistant to work for 12 months on the research project "Early acquisition of word order properties" supervised by Dr. Judit Gervain and Dr. Thierry Nazzi (Laboratoire Psychologie de la Perception, CNRS – Université Paris Descartes). The project will explore how infants use different acoustic markings of prominence (duration, pitch, amplitude) to group elements together, which might provide a mechanism to specify the word order implemented in the native language. The project will rely on both behavioural methods (headturn preference procedure) and near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS).
You will have a Masters in Experimental Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Physiology, Neuroscience or a related discipline. High proficiency in French is required (since you will need to interact with infants, their parents, and other members in the team). Experience with infants is mandatory. Previous experience in developmental research, with imaging techniques and/or in statistical analyses will be favoured. The position is available for 12 months. The successful candidate will be expected to start on January 1st 2012. Salary in Paris will be in accordance with the French state regulated public service salary scale.

Postdoctoral research fellow: Prosodic phrasing and phonological modeling in French / English and Romance Languages
This post-doc position is offered by the 10-year project "Empirical foundations of linguistics" that is starting in 2011. This position is linked to the work package Prosodic phrasing and prosodic hierarchy : a data driven approach of the strand "Phonetic and phonological complexity - boosting empirical approaches" project. The successful candidate will investigate how to provide a formal grammar that accounts for prosodic phrasing in French in a stochastic grammatical paradigm. As many independantly motivated constraints come into play and interact in a complex way, corpus analyses will be necessary to formulare and outweight the various constraints/parameters.
The applicant should have a PhD in phonology or phonetics. She should also have the following skills : (i) excellent knoweldge of phonological and phonetics works dedicated to phrasing and the phonology-syntax interface. Comprehensive understanding of recent stochastic approaches to phonological modeling will be highly valuable (stochastic OT, etc.) (ii) research experience in phrasing in French and/or in other Romance or Germanic languages (iii) experience in corpus work and experimental phonology (designing an experience to elicit data, etc.) The candidate should send a CV with list of publications, a siteweb where publications can be found and the names of two referents.

Postdoctoral research fellow: Physiological Data Acquisition and Processing in Speech Production
This post-doc position is offered by the 10-year project "Empirical foundations of linguistics" that started in 2011 and is linked to the strand "Phonetic and phonological complexity - boosting empirical approaches". The successful candidate will contribute to the physiological and acoustic data collection, and will elaborate signal processing methods and tools to analyse/assess voice and speech in normal and pathological populations. Her responsibilities will include selecting and recording acoustic and articulatory data (ultrasound, EGG, video with high speed imaging and aerodynamics), carrying out acoustic and articulatory analyses.
Voice and speech assessment is a growing field which requires multiparametric evaluations. Clinical phonetics and medical sciences share the same instrumentations to explore vocal function at the physiological, acoustical and behavioural level. Physiological and articulatory data are still scarce however they convey information complementary to acoustic cues. This research aims at studying the complexity of speech production mechanisms as a whole, with the coordination of respiratory, phonatory and articulatory behaviour in normal phonation and detecting deviant or compensatory gestures due to pathology. The successful candidate will undertake experiments of two types. One will consist in defining parameters for acoustical and physiological data collection and designing analysis methods. The second will consist in an attempt of modelling phonatory and articulatory behaviours for i) normal standard and non standard productions such as whispered voice or singing styles, ii) and pathological productions. The aim is to better understand deviant speech production mechanisms and compensation capabilities.
Salary: 24 000 €/year. Duration: 12 monts, starting May or June 2012.

Engineer: Alignment of heterogeneous physiological data
The Labex EFL invites applications for a position within the 10-year project “Empirical foundations of linguistics” that started in 2011. This position is open within the strand “Language resources for French” of this project. This a full time position. The person filling this position will work on signals of different types: articulatory, aerodynamic and acoustic parameters. The engineer will manage the alignment and synchronization of these heterogeneous signals. The candidate will have a good knowledge in signal processing, Matlab programming. The successful candidate will work on different file formats (video, audio, articulatory). Two main tasks : Develop solutions to align the different signals(post-recording). Propose solutions to record simultaneous data from different instruments (fiberscopy, ultrason, video movies, acoustic microphone).
