An experimental position is available for (supersonic) molecular beam studies on single crystal surfaces that probe the influence of water(-fragments) and steps on dissociation dynamics of H2 and O2. Experiments employ a unique UHV facility combining two (supersonic) molecular beams and a cylindrically polished single crystal. These studies are supplemented with surface science studies of co-adsorbed water and non-aqueous solvents on well-defined metal surfaces. 
A PhD candidate has an MSc degree in chemistry, physics or strongly related field with an outstanding academic track record, and a provable strong interest in experimental physical chemistry, chemical physics, and surface science.

A position in computational chemistry is available for the calculation by density functional theory (DFT) of the interaction of water at various coverages with stepped platinum surfaces, in the absence and presence of hydrogen and oxygen on the surface. These calculations should provide more insight into the complex behavior of water and dissociated water on “real” platinum surfaces. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with the experimental part of the group, that studies stepped platinum surfaces both in ultra-high-vacuum and under electrochemical conditions.
The successful PhD candidate should have a MSc degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics, with a background or provable strong interest in theoretical/computational chemistry. Experience with quantum-chemistry codes is preferred but not a condition.
