How about a sign at the desk on which the names of languages (Francais, Deutsch etc.) can be stuck on or removed - maybe with Velcro. If a particular member of staff comes in then he/she puts her language on the sign and then takes it off at the end of the day. That way people can see in an instant which languages are available to be spoken on that day.

Subject: Staff with language skills - how best to communicate this to the visitor?

Hi Gem

We are looking for ways to convey to visitors that we have staff who can communicate in a range of languages including BSL, without a clutter of signs on our information desk. Not only may these go unnoticed but a particular member of staff with a particular skill may not be in on that day, with a 7 day operation, which would be decidedly unhelpful for the visitor!

Do you have any suggestions? One idea has been badges.

Best wishes

Julia
