Hi, I hope this project will be of interest to the list and is within the etiquette of such posts. Field Broadcast West is a project by the artists Rebecca Birch and Rob Smith that we have helped to fund through Creative Citizen initiative at Bournemouth University. Originally established with SCAN, this is an element of some research into the development of the software by artists that can then be used in a variety of contexts from citizen media to citizen science, as well as the arts. In addition to practical help by directly assisting those working in the difficult field of media arts in the UK at this time, the project seeks to find sustainable and socially engaged new media practices that stand in their own right as well as providing models for engagements by scientists and journalists to help communities create their own public policy documents. The project as a whole is a collaboration with the Extreme Citizen Science Research Centre at UCL. We believe this kind of innovative work can go beyond any political byline of 'big society' (UK Coalition Government speak for cutting state services underpinned by the so-called radical thinking of red conservative Phillip Blonde). Creative thinking through new media, open tools, systems and networks can potentially lead to ways of giving voice to remote, unconnected and unrepresented in our society, creating documents, data and evidence as we see a shift towards open societal models of participation. It might not be what they are expecting, but as they asked, we should oblige. So in the spirit of participation and as professionals interested in new media arts audience, if you want to receive some live unscheduled broadcasts care of Field Broadcast West direct to your computer desktop or laptop - simply download the widget. See details below. Please feel free to forward. We hope you enjoy.
