Developments in Economics Education Conference Bookings Open

The Economics Network is pleased to announce that the bookings for the Developments in Economics Education conference are now open. Book before the 1st July to take advantage of the early bird offer. DEE is running from the 5th-7th September 2011 at the London School of Economics. The conference spans over three days:
-5th September – Key Contacts Conference designed for Key Contacts (representatives from Economics departments in the UK with an interest in Economics education) but is open to all academic staff. Includes sessions on Designing Induction Programmes and Using Games and Experiments
-6th September – the Main DEE Conference. Sessions will include a mixture of keynotes, papers, posters and workshop sessions with a keynote from Diane Coyle.
-7th September - Internationalisation Workshop. Attracting and supporting international students is an increasingly important aspect of higher education Economics: this workshop offers the opportunity to discuss, share and explore issues and practice to support internationalisation.
Please note that authors who have their proposals accepted will be required to register for the conference.

The Economics Network is pleased to invite nominations from the economics community for our annual learning and teaching awards. The national awards are open to UK-based academics that have demonstrated excellent commitment, enthusiasm and effectiveness in their teaching practices. Nominations are invited under the following three categories:
• Outstanding Teaching Award • eLearning Award • Student Nominated Award
The deadline is Thursday 30th June.

There are a few places available on the upcoming Developing Your Economics Teaching workshop on the 17th June at Burwalls, University of Bristol. The workshop is aimed at new and early career lecturers. The workshop will focus on:
- Curriculum design: including key considerations and stages, as well as opportunities to discuss and explore examples
- Sharing teaching experiences: an opportunity to discuss and reflect on participants experiences in teaching

The Economics Network ran ten student focus groups across the UK in the 2010/11 academic year. The confidential focus groups discussed issues of the department’s choosing, primarily focussing on the NSS themes and issues raised in the Economics Network’s student surveys. A report on the ten focus groups is available, highlighting the common themes that were discussed.

This year we asked students to send in creative entries on the topic "Why Study Economics @ University?" We received many entries, including essays, songs, a rap and cartoons. The winner, Joevas Asare from the University of Surrey wrote and performed a rap about how studying economics will help him to find a job and fall in love.
