Dear All,
There is a well known psychological study that shows people are more likely to comply with the instructions or the stated norms *if* they believe they are being monitored on their behaviour. The term is called anticipatory conformity, which was coined by Shoshana Zuboff in her book In the age fo the smart machine: the future of work and power (1988).

I came across the reference in Michael Froomkin's excellent article The death of Privacy? http://osaka.law.miami.edu/~froomkin/articles/privacy-deathof.pdf

Be grateful that you can be aware of this monitoring because the technology is increasing exponentially to the point where such monitoring, through remote sensors that you will not be able to see them. The RFID is a crude example, which still contains a huge amount of information, which will be advanced to the point where they can be placed in clothes to let you know when they need to be dry cleaned. RFIDs are placed in building support structures and other places where critical infrastructure needs to be monitored. To be sure, the RFID is a very old technology and the newer developments make the RFID look like typewriters against laptops.

Like those who can recall a world *before* photocopiers, today's generation will recall the days where privacy really existed as a lost golden age.

Best,

Lawrence
P.S. Always remember to smile for the camera. :)

Maybe an accidental fire in the bin? This really is taking things too far, what is their reasoning and what justification can they legitimately claim?

I'm all for recycling, but if I was being monitored in this particularly spooky way my bin would accidentally get peanut butter smeared inside the lid just where the lens is, the cam would start to fail in a number of interesting ways, or I'd just use a second bin....
