I got to look at the book last week and had chance to read a chapter or two.

This is a really helpful contribution to understanding who chaplains are and what it is that we do, in all our various incarnations.

Well done Mark.

Subject: New Book - Being a Chaplain

Dear All,

A (slightly shamed) piece of self publicity.

Over the past year I have been involved in co-editing a book on chaplaincy. The first five parts of the book gather together stories of 22 chaplains working in a wide variety of contexts (including several healthcare chaplains) and the final part consists of four essays on key themes: multi-faith issues; the core skills needed by a chaplain; models of chaplaincy; and tensions that can arise in the work. Against the sometimes negative stereotypes of chaplaincy we argue that chaplains are a valuable resource to the Church and that our experiences and expertise can be very helpful for thinking about ministry, ecclesiology and the engagement with contemporary society.

'An excellent and intelligent overview of chaplaincy today and tomorrow. There is a huge amount here for established chaplains, for those new to this ministry and for the whole Church.

--The Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, Bishop of Sheffield

'Such a collection of stories as is found here, together with the careful reflection on the demands and needs of such a ministry, is to be entirely welcomed. It will provide an invaluable resource not only for those engaged in chaplaincy work, in their training and ongoing development, but also for the wider Church.'

--Paul Ballard, Emeritus Professor, Cardiff University
