I've just come across a Euorpean funded project that developed on-line ELT materials for deaf people using sign language. Might be worth a look

There is an exemption for those who are not able to pass ESOL SFL test due to disability....apply for exemption supported by medical note
Tutor can also verify that she has worked on ESOL but is not able to take S/L exams for that reason.

We have a similar problem, in that we have a Thai student who is hard of hearing and has consequent pronunciation problems. She wants to get Citizenship but cannot pass the Speaking & Listening test. Does anyone know whether the Home Office accepts quals other than S&L? Her reading and writing is good for her level.

Subject: Profoundly deaf Polish ESOL learner

  Hi everyone
I have just had an ESOL enquiry from JobcentrePlus in Southampton. They have a Polish client who is profoundly deaf but who needs to learn English. Apparently she can read and write a little in English and is presumably literate in Polish, but I don't know if she uses international sign language.

Does anyone have experience of supporting profoundly deaf ESOL learners, and if so, please could you make some suggestions as to how this learner can be supported? I'm wondering if any colleges have experience of this, or whether we should be approaching the RNID about it, or Polish organisations within the UK. Any ideas?
  best wishes
  Allegra
