Heriot-Watt University is inviting applications for a fully funded three-year PhD studentship carrying out research into how rich media mobile & web applications, data mining and crowd sourcing technologies can provide designers with instantaneous and iterated visual feedback from large (crowd-sourced) audiences.

This project is funded by the University’s Creativity Design and Innovation theme and be supervised by staff from the schools of Design & Textiles and Mathematical & Computer Sciences.

This exciting inter-disciplinary project covers a range of research areas from semiotics to design studies to rich web applications as it seeks to bring together these diverse disciplines in a bid to revolutionise our understanding and use of imagery (co-) design process, as web-enabled feedback, and for design itself. It promises to generate a range of highly marketable applications for trend prediction, customisation and sustainability via consumer engagement, as well as offering further insights into the communication potential of visual design disciplines.

The project is suited to a design or art graduate with an interest and understanding in visual feedback and who has basic computer programming skills, or a programming graduate who has interests and experience of the arts or design. The successful candidate will work alongside a team of researchers with specialisms in these areas. Training in developing rich web/mobile applications will be provided, but basic programming skills would be advantageous.
