Within the Australian context the CSIRO National Measurement Laboratories
artists' residencies of 1984 are probably the earliest. However, the
grandmother of all these initiatives is probably LACMA's programme in the
1960's.

The key issues and problems were nascent in both these initiatives and
remain in current activities, such as Synthetic Aesthetics.
