Dear all,

In these times of austerity measures the future of an 18th century London workhouse has a particular resonance so I'd like to bring list members attention to the following campaign (and opportunity to sign the petition).

The Cleveland Street workhouse was originally built in 1775 and is considered to be the best preserved Georgian era workhouse in Central London, one of only three remaining in the Capital. In the 1920s it became part of the Middlesex Hospital and played a role during the Blitz, running as an outpatient department until 2005 when the hospital was demolished. 

Complete redevelopment of the workhouse site has been proposed - a private residential development. Recent research has revealed that the building was the likely inspiration for Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
