Subject: Bad catalogues
Our
Friends group has asked me to give them a talk on cataloguing archives.
I'm happy to oblige but am aware that however enthusiastic I am about
cataloguing, this could be a rather dry subject.
I
generally find that examples of bad cataloguing are more instructive than
examples of good cataloguing - and humorous examples of bizarre cataloguing
would decidedly liven up my talk! Bad catalogues probably demonstrate
more clearly than anything else, all the considerations one has to juggle in
deciding how to order and describe items in a collection.
I
have a couple of such examples in mind, but I wondered if anybody would be
happy to share with me any particularly striking examples of how *not* to
catalogue.
Needless
to say, I am looking for very old examples which wouldn't embarrass anybody
today - those catalogues which have been knocking round for decades, produced
by long forgotten archivists. I'm sure we've all made mistakes in the
past, so I hasten to add that I'm not looking to name and shame. Please
don't email anything you think might embarrass another listserv member.
Thanks,
