THE CAMBRIDGE STATISTICS DISCUSSION GROUP PLEASE NOTE SLIGHTLY LATER STARTING TIME Wednesday 23rd February 2011 7:30 for 8:00 Tom Ap Rees Lecture Theatre, Department of Plant Sciences, Downing Site, Cambridge, CB2 3EA Head in the sand or Line in the sand: measuring progress of the public sector into a low carbon world David Pencheon NHS Sustainable Development Unit (NHS SDU) Abstract: This talk describes the work of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) and explores the measurements that are used to help develop organisations, people, tools, and policy to help the NHS in England fulfil its potential as a leading sustainable and low carbon organisation. How can data, metrics and statistics change behaviours and attitudes? - 2 year's experience with one of the world's largest organisations. (Background: The SDU helps to shape NHS policy nationally and locally, spread the best evaluated practice on sustainable development, promote an appropriate NHS response to climate change and develop programmes of organisational and personal development in these areas for NHS organisations, staff, and partners.) Speaker: David Pencheon is a UK trained Public Health Doctor who was previously Director of a Public Health Observatory in Cambridge from 2001 to 2007. David has worked as a clinical doctor in the NHS, a joint Director of Public Health, a Public Health Training Programme Director in the East of England, with the NHS R&D programme, and in China in the early 1990s with Save the Children Fund (UK). He is currently Director of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (England) [NHS SDU]. His main interests and areas of research and publication are: sustainable development, large scale transformational change, health and climate change, underpinning action and policy with good information and evidence, training and professional development, organisational development, medical informatics and decision support for health professionals. Directions: The Department of Plant Sciences is located on the Downing site situated between Downing Street and Tennis Court Road. Go through the second door you come to in the building immediately on your left as you enter from Tennis Court Road. Once inside the building follow the arrows. Refreshments will be served in the first floor kitchen. It is not possible to park on the Downing site in the evening. The nearest car park is at Lion Yard.
