One can also use SPM's 3D to 4D instead of AFNI functions,
Batch->SPM->Util->3D to 4D
or
Graphics->Task->SPM->Util->3D to 4D

Many other options are also available.

Well, I haven't received any reply yet, so, my guess is that only single volumes could be used as inputs to SPM for the purpose of spatial processing.

To concatenate sub-bricks (single volumes) from input datasets into one big 3D+time dataset you can use 3dTcat function which comes with AFNI (http://afni.nimh.nih.gov/afni). This function will write the expanded (concatenated or union) big 4D dataset in BRIK format. To convert to nifti, you can use the other (AFNI) function 3dAFNItoNIFTI.

Note: Lost in translation
using collapse/expand in the literature:
collapse == disunion = separate = disperse
expand == union = concatenate = consolidate

Hello,

We keep getting multiple nii files when trying to convert DICOM into nii too. Do you know how to collapse them into one file? If you could let us know of any response you receive to your email we would greatly appreciate it. We are very new to SPM.

Thank you in advance for whatever assistance you can provide.

Michelle

Hello Group

Is there still a problem with nii multiple volume format in SPM8?
Thus, do we have to collapse the big nii file to single volumes?
