Hi all,

In response to Joel’s observation re a variety of NMH charges, my quick offering as to why NMH charges may differ from service to service, and provider to provider is below.

The Student Support Update of March 2007 includes statements clarifying how DSA NMH charges can be calculated by the services which provide them ie simply speaking it is the cost of the pay to the worker plus any costs associated with running and administering that service. (I couldn’t forward the document as it made the message too large.)

On-cost factors and amounts will vary from year to year.

On the basis that NMH charges are based on pay plus on-costs you could expect that across the country and between services there will be differing charges for reasons such as:

•        Some areas of the country may be required to pay higher pay rates

•        Some NMH providers CRB check their workers, others don’t

•        Insurances may differ across providers, for example there might be public liability insurance, employers liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance

•        Some providers run a small service, some a big service so the on-costs will spread over more or less workers

•        Some providers have to hire space, some don’t

•        Etc etc

regards, Marie

At risk of exposing unseasonal white elephant the very useful NNAC Wiki & CLASS database of NMH charges reveal mammoth variations in charges.  Why is all this so woolly ; )
