For the biblical material there is an overview in John Day, God's Conflict with the Dragon and the Sea: Echoes of a Canaanite Myth in the Old Testament (University of Cambridge Oriental Publications 35), Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1985.

For a quick and dirty start on these kinds of things it is usually helpful to check the comments on each of the relevant biblical verses in Cornelius a Lapide, Commentaria in sacram scripturam (Paris: Vivès, 1866-75 was the last ed.), which will often indicate the principal patristic commentaries on the passages and the general lines of traditional interpretation.

Robert Kaske's Medieval Christian Literary Imagery: A Guide to Interpretation (Toronto medieval bibliographies 11), Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1988, is a marvellous guide to medieval resources for tracing this kind of theme.

You might also try the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, Downers Grove, Ill: InterVarsity Press, 1998, and other things like it. -- Paul

Greetings all,
I'm wondering if anyone knows of any studies of Leviathan and how it was interpreted in the Middle Ages?
I have an interested student  (who wants to compare it to the midgard-serpent!) and we're not sure where
to start.
