medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

For the biblical material there is an overview in John Day, *God's Conflict
with the Dragon and the Sea: Echoes of a Canaanite Myth in the Old Testament
* (University of Cambridge Oriental Publications 35), Cambridge: Cambridge
University Press, 1985.

For a quick and dirty start on these kinds of things it is usually helpful
to check the comments on each of the relevant biblical verses in Cornelius a
Lapide, *Commentaria in sacram scripturam* (Paris: Vivès, 1866-75 was the
last ed.), which will often indicate the principal patristic commentaries on
the passages and the general lines of traditional interpretation.

Robert Kaske's *Medieval Christian Literary Imagery: A Guide to
Interpretation* (Toronto medieval bibliographies 11), Toronto: University of
Toronto Press, 1988, is a marvellous guide to medieval resources for tracing
this kind of theme.

You might also try the *Dictionary of Biblical Imagery*, Downers Grove, Ill:
InterVarsity Press, 1998, and other things like it. -- Paul
