Dear all,
We currently have a PhD student with us from Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi who is researching early telephone history in
India.
She is anxious to locate any records of the short-lived (in
India) Crossley Telephone Company, the Anglo-Indian Telephone Company (she has
found some of these at the National Archives of Scotland), the Oriental Telephone
Company, the Bengal Telephone Company and the Bombay Telephone Company, all of
which were ultimately taken over by the Indian Government.
These companies were associated to some degree or another with UK
telephone companies (before they themselves merged and were ultimately taken
over by the Government in 1912), so it is perhaps not beyond the realms of
fantasy that some records may have survived among the private papers of a
shareholder or even company officer in this country.
Rather a long shot, but I promised to put out an appeal.
Nothing in the India Records Office apparently, and nothing on
Archives Hub.
Thanks
David Hay
