I would be very grateful if you could please forward this to colleagues and PhD students who might be interested.

Candidate profile and key technical skills required:

- Strong mathematical, computing and data analysis skill;
- Experience in data regression, data reconciliation, data mining and optimization.
- Good skill in using Microsoft EXCEL;
- Interest in mathematical modelling work.

Duration of the project: 6 months
Company location: Sunbury-on-Thames near London

Application process: To apply, please send a CV and a cover letter to Vera Hazelwood ([log in to unmask])

Project description
------------------------

BP is mainly an oil and gas energy company with strong investment in alternative energy. The internship is focused on refining technology in BP downstream. The intern will have an opportunity to become familiar with refining technology development, refinery operation and refinery technical support.

Hydroprocessing is one of the most important processes across BP refineries. BP has developed a computer model to simulate BP hydroprocess units. The model has played an important role in monitoring, optimizing and revamping and design new hydroprocess units. As environment regulation and market demand for clean fuel become more stringent, BP faces new challenge in operating its hydroprocess units. The proposed project is to analyze the gap between the requirement and the current capability of the hydroprocess model based on pilot plant data and advanced speciation data and to improve the model capability and the model accuracy in prediction. We expect that data regression, data reconciliation, data mining and optimization will be required during the project. The proposed project aims are:

- Consolidate, sort and save relevant data for future reference.
- Identify current hydroprocessing model technical gaps.
- Run hydroprocess model with certain speciation data, analyse and propose best practise on which method to use in different refinery applications.
- Deliver an improved hydroprocess model.

BP's industrial supervisor will provide the necessary expertise in chemical engineering.

Please visit www.ktn-internships.net for more information about the EPSRC Industrial Mathematics Internships Programme. In summary:

- a current PhD student enrolled in a UK university preferably in the second or further year.
- be prepared to be based at the company during the project for at least 3 days a week.
- have an interest and expertise in the area of the internship.

The following conditions apply for an internship project:

- A student receives a stipend of up to 1,500 pounds per month during the project. All travel or relocation expenses are paid for separately by the company.
- A student still has the same time to complete PhD studies as funding for the internship is provided separately from PhD funding and the duration of the PhD is extended without affecting completion rates.
- The Intern remains a student at the University; he/she will not be an employee of the company during the Internship but will be based at the company's premises.
