Hi Tim

I would have thought the only way to resolve this issue would be to compare haemoglobin levels from the portable blood gas analyser against your laboratories haemoglobin measurements. After all what is a measured haemotocrit apart from the classical method which involves high speed centrifugation of the whole blood and measurement of the ratio of packed red cell expressed as a fraction of the initial volume of blood.

cheers

Subject: Measured vs Calculated Haemoglobin

We are looking at portable blood gas analysers for use in the community, most of the smaller ones which use disposable cartridges measure haematocrit and calculate haemoglobin.  What are the errors or asumptions in the calculation of haemogobin using measured haematocrit, and are they clinically relevant when applied to further calculated parameters such as  oxygen saturation.

Tim.
