This is an excellent opportunity for an early career researcher, looking to develop research in this area. The successful applicant will have excellent social research skills and will be able to work independently to the direction of the Head of Department. The appointment is offered for 3 years from 01 September 2010 Responsibilities The purpose of the post of PDRA to the Head of Department is to assist the Head of Department with academic research in the field of political geography with particular reference to the geography of the state and citizenship, urbal political geography and socio-spatial theory. Key responsibilities are: - * Undertake literature searches. * Compile bibliographic data using Endnote. * Write literature reviews and commentaries. * Draft grant applications. * Identify and collate primary source materials (e.g. webpages, official documents, reports, press articles). * Undertake field research using qualitative social research methods. * Sort, code and analyse primary source materials and field data. * Maintain one or more websites relating to research. * Manage internet mailing lists using Jiscmail. * Organize seminars, conferences and workshops. * Contribute to writing research articles and conference papers. * Contribute to editing books. * Maintain online and paper archives of research materials and publications. Person Specification Essential * Higher degree in human geography, urban studies, politics, sociology, anthropology or related subject. * A PhD (completed, submitted or close to submission) in human geography, urban studies, politics, sociology, anthropology * Interest in political geography (including the following topics: geography of the state and citizenship, urban political economy and socio-spatial theory). * Excellent IT skills: email, web, wordprocessing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software. * Excellent social research skills using primary and secondary sources. * Ability to write concise, accurate, effective and well-edited prose for a variety of audiences. * Ability to work to deadlines. * Good organizational skills. * Good attention to detail. * Good communication and interpersonal skills Desirable * Knowledge of political geography (including one or more of the following topics: geography of the state and citizenship, urban political economy and socio-spatial theory). * Competent with Microsoft Office software suite, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. * Competent with Endnote bibliographic software. * Competent with Wordpress weblog system. * Skills in webpage design and maintenance.
