Dear SEDA colleagues,
I am involved with work on using student surveys to support
the enhancement of learning and teaching. Here in the UK the National Student
Survey (NSS) has a big influence and many institutions triangulate this with
their own internal surveys and other evidence (e.g. student focus groups) to
better understand their students’ learning experience. However, in order
to use this information effectively for enhancement there needs to be a
strategy for working with academic staff and supporting their professional
development in this area.
I’m conducting an informal study to share issues,
ideas and examples of practice on professional development associated with using
students surveys (and other data) for enhancing learning and teaching. I’d
be interested to hear what activities colleagues are undertaking to support academic
staff in responding to data, whether anyone has triangulated student data with
staff data (e.g. conceptions of teaching) and any other professional development
issues related to such evidence-informed practice.
I hope to gather information from a wide range of
institutions across the UK and internationally, and intend to share my findings
on this list, via Educational Developments and at the SEDA annual conference.
All responses will be treated entirely confidentially and any quotes used publicly
will be anonymised. I look forward to hearing your perspectives:
1)
What professional development issues arise for academic
staff in using student data for the enhancement of learning and teaching?
2)
In what ways do you support academic staff in using
student data for the enhancement of learning and teaching?
Thanks very much for your help.
Helen
