Hi Chris,

I had a meeting recently with our Admissions Manager to discuss the possibility of considering a slightly reduced offer for care leavers. He was concerned that if we give special consideration to this group other groups such as students with a disability or those who have been ill etc during their exams might argue that they should also receive special consideration and a reduced offer. Did your Admissions Team discuss these types of issues and how did they deal with them?

Many thanks,

Maria

Please find attached our plan of commitment, this should be available publicly through this weblink http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ugstudy/introduction/applying/admissions-procedures.php <http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ugstudy/introduction/applying/admissions-procedures.php> but it appears there is a 'hitch' affecting this at the moment.

We have about half a dozen applications so far this year.

	Hi

Our Widening Participation unit provides a lot of advice and support to care leavers, we help with the process of applying to university, have leaflets aimed at care leavers from local schools and colleges. We have achieved the Frank Buttle quality mark for our services to care leavers.

We provide a £1000 bursary to all care leavers attending the University of Greenwich, under the age of 25, full year round accommodation and a mentoring scheme, where care leavers are linked with a member of staff who will be their support and first point of contact for the full 3-4 years of their study with us.

We are engaged in a 3 year study project looking at the experience of care leavers studying with us.

When we started we had 5 care leavers - last year we had 46 confirmed, this year it looks to be in excess of 67 so far - so our pre-entry work is really doing something and we are beginning to be recognised as a care-leaver-friendly university.

We have factsheets about ours services, financial aids and practical advice on how to set up living on your own.

We also run social events out of term time, which aim to ensure that care leavers and other students who stay over holiday periods on campus are not isolated.

If you would like to know any more detail fee free to give me a ring.

	Dear All,

Do any of your institutions provide any support or assistance for student applicants who are leaving care, for example, pre-entry guidance or support during their course of study? I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has considered reducing the UCAS tariff or who have reviewed their admissions criteria and introduced a flexible approach for applicants who are leaving care.

Please reply off line to [log in to unmask]

	Kind regards,

	Maria
