While researching a totally different story, I stumbled on an account of a 
traveller in Cornwall who said that an area was known for the breeding of 
mules for the mines, where they were used for the carrying of ore.  Very 
sorry not to have made notes and am off to Oz today.  Hope that I have given 
enought clues for a Google search.
