medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Second, I've read a lot of wills from England from the 14th century onward,
and even the most humble testators usually leave money to the "lights"
(lumines) in their parish church, either generally "ad ecclesiam" or to a
specific saint's altar.

Best,
John

Is the phrase' a shilling for candles' a post-medieval bequest? I have
found it in an early 18th century will.
