Research Fellow in Computational Astronomy

USD$42,000 - USD$45,500 per annum, full time, plus excellent benefits
(e.g. furnished housing with paid utilities, local transportation
allowance, annual travel allowance).

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to work on an advanced computational
solution to a critical problem in modern astronomy: the
characterisation and measurement of galaxy morphologies. This project
involves the development of novel techniques for measuring aspects of
galaxy morphology - particularly the decomposition of galaxies into
their more fundamental structural components =96 and the practical
application of these techniques to existing and upcoming large imaging
surveys. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to
assist with the utilisation of the resulting datasets to study
questions of galaxy evolution, and contribute to related science with
the Galaxy Zoo project and GAMA (Galaxy And Mass Assembly) survey.

The primary project will performed in collaboration with Dr Alex
Rojas, along with an international team of astronomers, statisticians
and computer scientists. This position, along with a complementary
post at The University of Nottingham in the UK (see separate
advertisment), is funded by a grant from the Qatar National Research
Fund. The funding includes a generous provision for travel, including
regular visits to collaborators in UK.

A PhD degree, relevant research experience and competent programming
skills are required. Candidates should submit their application using
the Careers@CarnegieMellon website;
