Hi Doreen,
As far as I know it depends on the
content of the emails as opposed to the fact that they are emails themselves. There
may be some information contained in certain emails that has to be kept for a
certain period of time, for instance if it relates to financial matters.
However, I am not aware of any requirement to keep emails in themselves for any
particular period of time. An email is no different from a letter – you wouldn’t
say there is a legal requirement to keep all letters for a certain period, but
would instead look at the content of the letters and fit them into an
appropriate retention/disposal schedule.
