medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Sounds suspect to me. at what date (and where in 'Germany') is he referring to? In 12th - 13th c. Iceland, the bride and groom had to be observed to get into the same bed together, after which people presumably retired. On one occasion the bride jumped out of bed when the groom got in . . . presumably that marriage was invalid, as well as not being consumated (which would also have made it invalid in the eyes of the church, as has I think been pointed out). He was referring to Germany and it is not clear which class of medieval bride he is referring to. Was this common and does this crowded bedroom not undermine the role of the Church - or did the Church give its blessing?
