Wasn't there a practice of hanging around outside the bedroom listening to the proceedings?  I seem to recall some traditional German wedding customs that 
derive from that practice, but they escape me at the moment.

Bearing in mind that medieval society had far far less privacy than our own, its not terribly surprising.
