Adolescence in Modern Irish History University College Dublin, 30 January 2010 Organised by Susannah Riordan (School of History and Archives, UCD) and Catherine Cox (Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, School of History and Archives, UCD)

This one day workshop seeks to bring together scholars working on different aspects of the history of adolescence in modern Ireland with a view to sharing their insights and promoting this important theme.  For the purposes of this workshop the organisers define ‘adolescence’ as covering the years from 12 – 21 years but they are interested in hearing from potential participants who challenge this definition. One of the purposes of the workshop is to achieve a satisfactory definition of adolescence in historical context. The organisers encourage proposals addressing themes such as the following: ·        Medicine and welfare ·        Work ·        Family ·        Education ·        Religion ·        Politics and youth organisations ·        Sociability ·        Sexuality ·        Sport and leisure ·        Criminality ·        Literature and reading ·        Emigration
