Using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach to explore role transition in nursing

Abstract
This paper reports on a recent PhD study that explored nurse practitioners' experiences of role transition and professional autonomy, and the potential of the nurse practitioner role in the ever changing world of health care. Amongst specialist nursing roles, the position of the nurse practitioner is of particular interest, because nurse practitioners have evolved within an interprofessional philosophy of care, and therefore have complex issues relating to the scope of their professional practice, their individual and professional identity, and their professional autonomy.
The research was conducted using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach inspired by Ricoeur, and placed a significant emphasis on the meaning of the lived experience of the participant nurse practitioners within their professional role. Narrative interviews with fourteen nurse practitioners were transcribed to create a series of texts for subsequent analysis. Data analysis provided a progressive exploration of the meaning of the experience of professional autonomy for the participants in the study, and incorporated a descriptive analysis and an interpretive account of the phenomenon.
The presentation will consider both the methodological issues arising within the study and the findings.
Biography
Andy Mercer has worked at Bournemouth University since its inception. A mental health nurse by background, he joined the University as senior lecturer in mental health in 1992 just as the former polytechnic gained university status. Over the past ten years he has held a number of executive positions in the School, including Head of Programmes and Head of Quality and more recently acted as Associate Dean (Nursing). His current post is Senior Academic/Professional Lead in Mental Health & Learning Disabilities. He was awarded his PhD in 2008 following a thesis entitled Role transition and the nurse practitioner: An investigation into the experience of professional autonomy.
