The Royal Observatory Greenwich at the National Maritime Museum is the home of the international time zone system, and in the past it tested chronometers for the Royal Navy. The Museum now holds the national collection of marine chronometers and precision time-keeping devices, including the Harrison time-keepers, as well as important astronomical regulators associated with the Royal Observatory. The richness of its horological collections reflects its importance and the history of an institution that stretches back to the seventeenth century. The Curator of Horology will be expected to extend our expertise and ability to interpret these collections, and to provide succession planning and support for our internationally renowned Senior Specialist in Horology, Jonathan Betts. The main role of the Curator of Horology will be to promote the research and interpretation of our collections associated with time, especially precision time-keeping, (chronometers, regulators, clocks, watches etc.) within the broader disciplinary contexts of the history of science and technology, and maritime history. It will also be important to make these objects and associated stories accessible to a wide range of audiences.

We are therefore looking for an exceptional individual who is able to combine expertise in a relevant subject with a passion and knowledge about horological collections and a desire to communicate this enthusiasm to a wide audience, from academics to school children. A clear interest in the artefact must also be demonstrated and, although it is not essential that the post-holder has detailed experience of working with horological collections to date, he or she must be able to demonstrate a willingness to develop the necessary practical skills to analyse this material for research purposes.

To apply please send a CV and covering letter to Human Resources, National Maritime Museum, Park Row, Greenwich, London SE10 9NF or by e-mail to [log in to unmask] see further details at http://www.nmm.ac.uk/about/job-opportunities/curator-of-horology.
