'A Strange Convergence of Fears - Interpreting the Comparative History of Blood and Guts' THE ROY PORTER LECTURE Professor Shigehisa Kuriyama (Harvard University) Wednesday 27 May at 1730 Harrie Massey Lecture Theatre, 25 Gordon Street, London WC1 UK Traditional Chinese medicine is typically cast, today, as an alternative 'other' to modern Western medicine: critics and advocates alike stress the alien unfamiliarity of its vision of the body. Professor Kuriyama proposes, on the contrary, to spotlight a basic, yet neglected convergence. He will argue that by becoming modern, Western medicine also became in a sense more East Asian, and urges that one key to this convergence lies in the entwining of money and the body.
