Apologies for cross postings.

Dear Colleagues, please can you bring the following PhD Studentship to
the attention of prospective candidates -

Funded PhD Studentship in Astrochemistry at University Bordeaux 1:

"Low temperature kinetic studies of the astrochemically important
reactions of atomic nitrogen"

Supervisors: Dr Kevin Hickson and Dr Michel Costes, Institute of
Molecular Sciences, University Bordeaux 1.

Starting October 2009 for a period of 3 years. The closing date for
applications is the 6th March 2009. Funding is available for
candidates who have or who expect to receive the equivalent of a
French Masters degree in Chemistry, Physics or Astronomy/Astrophysics
from an EU or associated country.

Project Description
The thesis work involves the experimental investigation of
atom-molecule and atom-radical reactions of ground state atomic
nitrogen of interest to the chemistry of interstellar environments and
planetary atmospheres. A novel combination of discharge flow methods,
pulsed laser photochemistry and sensitive photodetection techniques
will be used to study these processes to temperatures as low as 50 K
in supersonic flows via the CRESU (Laval nozzle) technique. As such,
experience in the areas of experimental chemical kinetics,
experimental molecular physics or spectroscopy is advantageous, but
not a requirement.
