Dear Dr. Gray,
My apologies for the long delay in getting back to you. We are experiencing growing pains with our new (very much larger) building, and projects not directly connected to upcoming programs have been delayed. I am writing today to ask whether you are still interested in having a colleague from the University of Denver come to the museum to examine the Bute Book of Hours in the Berger Collection. If so, would you ask that person to be in touch with me to set up an appointment?
Again, I do apologize for the delay. I look forward to hearing from you.
With thanks,
Kathleen Stuart

Dear Dr. Gray,
It seems that our conservation lab must order a mount or cradle for the manuscript to be examined by your colleague. I don’t know yet how long this process will take but will keep you informed. Once the mount is made, we can schedule an appointment for your colleague.
With kind regards,
Kathleen Stuart

Dear Dr. Gray,
Thank you for your inquiry. I would be pleased to allow your colleague to examine the Bute Book of Hours. As I am new to the Denver Art Museum, I have asked my colleagues here about the procedures for setting up a visit. As soon as I hear from them, I will get back to you. In the meantime, I am copying by this email the museum’s Image Rights department who can help with your photo request.
With best wishes,
Kathleen Stuart

Subject: Bute Hours
Dear Ms Stuart,
I gather my colleague Chris Buckley has been corresponding with you about the Bute Hours in your collection and that she is ordering some images from the book. Chris and I are working on a study of one of the more obscure saints depicted in the book, St Armel, and I also have a tangential interest in the political ramifications of the cult of St Ninian. Chris's interests are iconographic but mine are more to do with the social and political implications of saints' cults, so what I am anxious to do is to try to identify possible owners of the book. To that end I would like to order copies of the pages depicting the owner and family: ff 20b, 23a, 117b, 118a, 121a in the description I have.
The makeup of the book is also going to be crucial, as I will need to see how the gatherings work and which miniatures are part of the same 'set', so to speak. Alas, it will be quite impossible for me to come to Denver to look for myself! However, I have a contact at the University of Denver, another medievalist, who has been interested by what I have told her about the book and who has said she would be happy to come to the museum and look at the book for me. Would that be possible, and what arrangements would I have to make?
With good wishes
Yours sincerely
Maddy Gray
